Well my brother, the old saying, 'Know your audience' should always be retro-projected in literature as a preface to every work of importance and in bold-faced type:

"KNOW THE AUTHOR'S AUDIENCE!"

Which of course would mean doing some library-level research into the culture of the day.

Something most modern readers just aren't willing to do.
